NEW YORK, June 7, 2018—The NYU School of Professional Studies (NYUSPS) Center for Publishing: Digital and Print Media will present the Summer Publishing Institute’s 40th Anniversary Celebration on Thursday, June 14. Vanessa K. De Luca '93, former editor-in-chief of ESSENCE, will be the keynote speaker.
A panel discussion will feature alumni from each decade of the Summer Publishing Institute’s 40 years. Publishing has undergone a major transformation in the past four decades with digital technology changing the rules of the game. Participants will hear first-hand stories of publishing through the decades and gain an inside look at the industry then and now. The discussion will be followed by a reception.

About the NYU School of Professional Studies Summer Publishing Institute
The Summer Publishing Institute is designed for recent college graduates, rising college seniors, and for young professionals who are interested in careers in book and magazine publishing. It immerses students in an intense, six-week study of books and digital/magazine media. The program combines workshops, strategy sessions, and presentations by some of the leading figures in publishing. Faculty members and speakers introduce students to the editorial, marketing, creative, business, sales, and digital aspects of the industry. The program also places a large emphasis on using content creation and business strategies to create hypothetical media brands and publishing companies.
This intensive program is taught by top professionals in the industry, including CEOs, publishers, editors, digital strategists, literary agents, video producers, designers, marketers, and publicists. Classroom learning includes lectures, workshops, and hands-on strategy sessions in subjects like content creation across all platforms, cover design, video shooting and editing, app development, manuscript editing, social media marketing, designing effective websites, and publicity and promotion. In addition, learning outside the classroom takes place during visits to major book publishing houses, independent bookstores, magazine media companies, and digital content companies across New York City. Students also have the opportunity to work at BookExpo, the largest gathering of publishers in the US.
